As the Game of Thrones broadcast on HBO is over, the places that served as filming location for the series have become popular tourist destinations. Spain has been present many times in the series. The show used the wild landscapes of the Basque Country, the architecture of cities like Seville or Cordoba as well as Spanish national parks.
Here are the different Spanish plases that served as filming locations for Game of Thrones.
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe
The small island of Gaztelugatxe is located in the autonomous community of the Spanish Basque Country. With its small chapel, its mass of steep rocks hit by the waves and its impressive stairs, no wonder this wild setting inspired the creators of Game of Thrones! In the series, the island hosts the Targaryens’ castle, called Dragonstone. For the needs of the show, the chapel was replaced by a huge fortress.
You can visit Gaztelugatxe throughout the year and enjoy a magnificent view of the coasts of the Basque Country.
In Seville, several locations were used for the filming of Game of Thrones. The Alcazar of Seville, an emblematic monument, hosted the Martell house in Dorne. With its many fountains and lush gardens, it was featured in the series as the Dorne Aquatic Gardens during season 5. The Mudejar palace served as the interior decor. It is the meeting place between Jaime Lannister and Prince Doran Martell. Whether you are a fan or not of the series, don’t hesitate to visit this impressive palatial complex during a stay in Seville, the place is really worth the detour!
The shipyards of Seville were used as a backdrop for the underground dungeons of the Red Keep in King’s Landing during season 7. It is in this place that Bronn, Jaime and Tyrion meet secretly. Also named Reales Atarazanas, their construction was commissioned by Alphonse X in 1252. They are in Gothic and Mudejar style with magnificent vaults still preserved. They are currently undergoing renovations and are scheduled to open to visitors by 2022.
The magnificent Bardenas Reales Natural Park serves as a backdrop to the Dothrakis desert. This is the place where Daenerys meets Khal Moro during season 6. It is located between Zaragoza and Pamplona. You can travel the park by car, bike, horse or by foot in this arid setting that will remind you of the American West.
The Sierra Alhamilla National Park is located in the south-east of Spain, near the city of Almeria. It served as a backdrop for the town of Vaes Dothrak. This is where Khal Moro takes Daenerys after capturing her. Its arid mountains but also its holm oak forest make it a real refuge for many animal species and in particular for birds.
Roman bridge of Córdoba
The real-life Volantis Bridge is actually in Cordoba! This Roman bridge was built in the 1st century to facilitate the crossing of the Guadalquivir. Today, it links the cathedral district to that of Campo de la Verdad. It is a beautiful place, with the impressive Tower of Calahorra and Bridge gate at its ends.
The bullring in Plaza de Toros de Osuna is none other than the bullring in Daznak located in the city of Mereen. This city located near Seville is very beautiful with its Baroque and Renaissance buildings. Aside from the arenas, you can also visit the Collegiate Church of St. Mary of the Assumption, the Convent of the Incarnation, the magnificent University of the Purísima Concepción and the very typical San Pedro Street.
Alcazaba de Almería
The Alcazaba of Almeria is a magnificent fortress located in Andalusia. In season 6, it replaces the Alcazar of Seville to represent the Aquatic Gardens of Dorne. This palace, originally built by the Arabs, was later taken over by the Catholic kings who built a castle there. While visiting the Alcazaba, you’ll enjoy a very beautiful view of the city and the port of Almeria.
The old town of Girona was the location for scenes taking place in Braavos. In its narrow alleys, you could see Arya becoming a Faceless. Saint Mary of Girona Cathedral has become the Grand Septuary of Baelor in the series. Located in the north of Catalonia, Girona is a very beautiful city, renowned for its medieval and Noucentist architecture.
The ancient fortress of Zafra Castle was chosen to embody the Tower of Joy. This key place holds the secret of Jon Snow’s birth. This castle is actually located in the province of Guadalajara. It was a strategic place during the struggle between Christian and Muslim kingdoms. It’s not possible to visit it but you can go and see its exterior which is very impressive.
Castell de Santa Florentina, Canet de Mar
The castle of Santa Florentina appears in the series as the castle of the Tarly family. It is located about 40 minutes north of Barcelona. This 11th century castle underwent renovations at the start of the 20th century by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, who built many buildings in the Barcelona area. It is impressive for its size but also for the magnificent decorations of its interior.
Peñíscola is located between Valencia and Barcelona. The city and in particular the square Santa María were the scene of several scenes taking place in Meereen. If you go there, you can visit its castle which dominates the city and offers a very beautiful view of the sea.
The Lighthouse of Mesa Roldán
The scene where Daenerys and her advisers met, in season 6, was filmed near the lighthouse of Mesa Roldán. This lighthouse in the province of Almeria was built in 1863. The site is very beautiful and you can enjoy magnificent views there.
Almodóvar del Río castle
The Castle of Almodóvar del Río is located west of Cordoba. In GoT, it embodies Highgareden, the seat of house Tyrell. This is where Olenna Tyrell retired during the siege led by Jaime Lannister. This castle is located on an impressive 250m high hill that overlooks the surrounding countryside. It has eight towers, including the most imposing Torre del Homenaje. If you visit it, you’ll be able to appreciate the architecture of this building which has been very well restored, but also the breathtaking view of the Guadalquivir valley.
The beach of Itzurun is none other than the shore of Peyredragon in the series. This impressive beach located in the town of Zumaia is the place that sees Daenerys land during season 7 and also Jon Snow thereafter. This beach is magnificent and its cliffs are impressive.
Located in Barrika, 25 minutes from Bilbao, Muriola beach is the hidden beach in Port-Réal where Tyrion discreetly lands with Davos in order to negotiate with Cersei. It offers a very beautiful view of the surroundings.
In Cáceres, several locations were used for the filming of Game of Thrones. Trujillo Castle first embodies Casterly Rock, Lannister’s fortress. Go visit it, it offers a very nice view of the city. The old town of Caceres and in particular Plaza de las Veletas is also in GoT. Finally, Los Barruecos Natural Park is the filming location for the battle between the Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen armies. Its granitic formations with strange shapes make this landscape truly unique.
